Suryaa National Desk: The chemical and petrochemical sector is expanding rapidly, strengthening its position in the global market through the development of industrial parks, research initiatives, and infrastructure. Official central government reports indicate that the sector is moving toward self-reliance by prioritizing environmentally friendly practices, quality standards, and industrial safety.

India currently ranks sixth globally and fourth in Asia in chemical production. The sector, valued at approximately $220 billion, is projected to reach $300 billion by 2030 and $1 trillion by 2040. India holds the second position in the manufacturing and export of dyes and the third position globally in the export of agrochemicals. This sector serves as a foundation for industries including pharmaceuticals, textiles, automobiles, and electronics.

To attract foreign direct investment (FDI), the government has permitted 100 percent FDI through the automatic route. Consequently, FDI inflows between 2014 and 2026 exceeded 1.04 lakh crore rupees. Production of major chemicals and petrochemicals has also shown significant growth compared to previous years. The government has established Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Regions (PCPIRs) to promote integrated industrial development.

As part of biotech and industrial development schemes, the government has initiated the creation of special chemical parks to enhance production capacity and reduce logistics costs. Additionally, the establishment of plastic parks is being encouraged to strengthen the plastic processing sector. Through the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology (CIPET), training is being provided to youth to support research, innovation, and skill development.

The government is implementing Quality Control Orders (QCOs) to improve product quality and protect consumers. Furthermore, training programs are being conducted nationwide to ensure worker safety in the handling of hazardous chemicals. Economic experts suggest that by adopting new technologies, the Indian chemical sector is progressing toward a significant role in global markets.
