A shocking incident has been reported from Jharkhand’s Seraikela-Kharsawan district, where a woman has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a police constable inside a police station. Following the complaint, the accused constable was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Five other police personnel, including the officer in charge of the station, have also been suspended for alleged negligence of duty.
The incident reportedly took place at Gamharia police station on the night of October 29.
Woman Sought Police Help After Dispute With Husband
According to the police, the woman had an argument with her husband on Thursday evening and left her home fearing that she might be assaulted. She took shelter at a neighbour’s house and contacted the police through her mobile phone.
A Police Control Room team subsequently reached the location and brought her to Gamharia police station. Police personnel reportedly arranged a room where she could stay safely for the night.
The woman later alleged that while she was in the room, a wireless operator posted at the police station entered and sexually assaulted her.
Constable Arrested After Complaint
Following the woman's written complaint, police initiated an investigation into the allegations. The accused was identified as Constable Neeraj Lakra, who was working as a wireless operator at the station.
Superintendent of Police Manoj Swargiary directed Seraikela Sub-Divisional Police Officer Anubhav Bhardwaj to investigate the case. Based on the investigation and the woman's complaint, the accused constable was arrested and subsequently sent to judicial custody.
Police have also seized the clothes allegedly worn by the accused at the time of the incident. The material is being processed for forensic examination at a laboratory in Ranchi.
Five Policemen Suspended
The case has also led to disciplinary action against other personnel at the police station. Five police officials, including the station officer in charge, were suspended over allegations of dereliction of duty, negligence, irresponsible conduct and indiscipline.
Authorities have said that a detailed investigation is underway and that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected.
Political Reaction
The incident has triggered criticism of the Jharkhand police administration. Opposition BJP leaders have questioned the functioning and accountability of the police department and demanded strict action against anyone found responsible.
Meanwhile, police officials have maintained that the investigation is being conducted according to legal procedures and that no person found guilty will be spared.
The case has raised serious concerns about the safety of women who approach police stations seeking protection or assistance. The investigation will now focus on establishing the sequence of events and examining the available forensic and other evidence.
