Suryaa National Desk: Moving backgrounds or animations seen in digital educational videos for kids make them screen… While moving backgrounds or animations in digital educational videos designed for children keep them glued to the screen, they actually do little to improve the quality of learning, researchers at the Indian School of Business (ISB) have concluded in their latest study. The researchers shed light on these key points by analyzing thousands of videos from popular children's YouTube channels, field experiments, and tracking the eye movements of young children. Although visual motion increases children's viewing time, this study makes it clear that all of that extra attention is focused on moving background elements rather than on the main subject matter. As part of this research, children's behavior was examined, and it was found that the presence of visual motion in videos helped children to focus on the screen more quickly even if they were distracted.
However, experts state that this does not increase comprehension or memory. While videos with moving backgrounds achieve slightly higher view rates compared to regular videos, it turns out that all those visuals are just to enliven the screen and not make the lesson easier to understand. The researchers clarified that there is no evidence that more animations always lead to better results. Experts suggest that parents, teachers and digital content creators should take key points from this latest study.
Just because children are spending more time in front of a screen does not mean they are getting better knowledge through those videos, they warn. It is believed that animations need to be created deliberately to explain concepts clearly and not just for entertainment or continuous stimulation. This study suggests that future digital educational content creation should have design approaches aimed at improving children's actual learning abilities rather than simply increasing views.
