Suryaa International Desk: Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a new directive requiring owners of private and non-governmental data centers to allocate at least 10 percent of their server capacity for government-designated IT infrastructure. This order allows Russian authorities to access this capacity during emergencies or disruptions to government digital services.

The decision follows recent security challenges, including drone attacks and network disruptions affecting major technology data centers in Russia, such as those operated by Yandex and Sberbank. Under the new decree, the Ministry of Digital Development is tasked with studying the available capacity and space in private data centers to prepare a comprehensive report.

Private operators are required to provide the allocated 10 percent of capacity for government use within 24 hours of an order being issued. A special government commission is being established to oversee this process. The decree also permits the temporary use of certain Russian-affiliated data centers located abroad, subject to approval from the Federal Security Service (FSB).
