Suryaa International Desk: A new walking trail has been opened for tourists and adventurers to access the ancient Oweynagat Cave, known in Irish mythology as the ‘Gate to Hell.’ Located at Rathcroghan in County Roscommon, the site is recognized as one of Europe’s oldest unexcavated royal historical complexes.

The area spans approximately 6.5 square kilometers and contains over 260 archaeological remains, including Iron Age forts, Ogham stones, and sacred wells. According to ancient Celtic mythology, the site is considered an entrance to the underworld. Historians note that the Oweynagat Cave is a primary inspiration for the ancient Irish festival of Samhain, which is the origin of the modern Halloween celebration. Local belief holds that this gateway opens during Samhain, allowing demons, supernatural entities, and deities with morphing powers to emerge. The cave is also known as the residence of the war goddess, Morrigan.

The new, environmentally friendly trail was developed to facilitate visitor access while ensuring the protection of the historical structures. By providing a safe route that avoids traversing through farm boundaries, the project allows visitors to observe ancient Irish culture and traditions. This initiative is intended to highlight Ireland's heritage and has become a new attraction for the tourism sector.
