Suryaa National Desk: The central government has announced a decision to increase the rice allocation target under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) to 5 million metric tonnes for the 2026-27 fiscal year. This measure is intended to control food grain prices in the domestic market and improve continuous supply in the open market.

Official sources stated that this initiative aims to ensure essential commodities remain available at affordable prices for the public. Experts anticipate that this decision will help keep rice prices under control across the country.

Data indicates that approximately 2.5 million metric tonnes of rice have already been sold through a transparent electronic auction process. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) is making arrangements to release the remaining quota into the market in phases over the coming months.

The scheme allows eligible bulk buyers, traders, and processors to participate in e-auctions to purchase rice. While rice stocks remain abundant, this program is intended to provide relief to consumers, particularly middle-class and poor populations, by mitigating inflationary pressure and preventing artificial shortages. The government continues to monitor market conditions to regulate supply according to demand.
