Suryaa Business Desk: India is witnessing a positive shift toward self-reliance in the energy sector as domestic coal production increases, leading to a gradual decline in imports. According to data released by the Union Ministry of Coal, total coal imports in August decreased by approximately 5.83 percent compared to the same month last year.

To meet the requirements of households, power generation plants, and the industrial sector, production is being continuously increased through Coal India and other mining operations. The use of modern technology to accelerate mining has improved transportation and supply chain efficiency. Consequently, thermal power plants and the steel industry are receiving sufficient supplies from local sources.

The reduction in foreign imports is contributing to the preservation of foreign exchange reserves and strengthening energy security. The government is implementing a specific strategy to further reduce imports and maximize domestic production. Measures include integrating the railway network for coal transportation and taking proactive steps to prevent fuel shortages. The administration is focused on ensuring a continuous supply of coal to the power sector, which is considered the backbone of the national economy. Experts view the decline in imports alongside record-level local production as a positive development for India's economic growth.
