Mumbai: Indian equity markets opened sharply higher on Wednesday, October 21, following the Dussehra holiday. Growing optimism over a possible India-US trade agreement, strong buying in IT stocks and positive global market cues lifted investor sentiment.
The benchmark Sensex surged more than 800 points during early trading, while the Nifty 50 crossed the 23,100 mark.
India-US Trade Deal Boosts Sentiment
Expectations of progress in India-US trade negotiations emerged as one of the key drivers behind the market rally. Comments suggesting that the two countries are moving closer to a trade agreement raised optimism among investors.
A potential agreement could reduce uncertainty surrounding tariffs and provide greater support to India's export-oriented sectors. However, a final agreement and an official signing date have not yet been announced.
Sensex, Nifty Rally
The Sensex, which had closed at 73,852.90 in the previous session, opened at 74,337.93. Buying momentum strengthened after the opening, pushing the index to around 74,682 at one point — a gain of more than 800 points from the previous close.
The Nifty 50 also started the session on a strong note. After opening at around 23,016 against the previous close of 22,888.95, the index moved above 23,100 during early trade.
The market later gave up some of its initial gains as investors remained cautious amid continued volatility.
IT Stocks Lead the Rally
IT stocks were among the major contributors to the market's strong performance. The Nifty IT index gained significantly during early trading, supported by buying in major technology companies.
Stocks such as Infosys, TCS, HCLTech and Tech Mahindra remained in focus. Better-than-expected quarterly performance from some companies also helped strengthen sentiment toward the technology sector.
L&T Technology Services was among the stocks that attracted attention after reporting its quarterly performance.
Reliance Industries, Jio IPO in Focus
Reliance Industries also remained on investors' radar. The company's digital arm, Jio Platforms, is attracting significant market attention with its public offering.
The Jio Platforms IPO is scheduled to remain open from October 21 to October 23, adding another major event for investors to track during the current market session.
Crude Oil Prices Remain a Concern
Despite the strong rally in Indian equities, elevated crude oil prices remain a key concern for investors.
Brent crude prices above the $110-per-barrel level could increase India's import bill and put pressure on the rupee and inflation. Higher oil prices could therefore remain a potential headwind for the domestic market.
US bond yields and global financial conditions are also expected to influence investor sentiment in the coming sessions.
Key Levels to Watch
For the Nifty, the 23,000–23,100 zone is likely to remain an important area for investors to watch. Sustained trading above these levels could strengthen the positive momentum, while the 22,800–22,700 zone may act as an important support area.
Market participants will closely monitor developments in the India-US trade negotiations, upcoming corporate earnings, crude oil prices and foreign institutional investment flows for further direction.
