Suryaa Now National Desk: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is visiting India as New Delhi and Washington look to strengthen cooperation across trade, energy, defence, technology and critical minerals. Rubio is scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai on Tuesday, with the discussions expected to cover the broader India-US strategic partnership as well as regional and global developments. The visit comes at a time when bilateral relations have faced tensions over trade and tariff policies, restrictions affecting Indian professionals and differences related to energy imports from Russia.

Trade and investment are expected to be among the key issues during the talks. Rubio has indicated that Washington and New Delhi are close to finalising a bilateral trade agreement, although negotiations have faced difficulties in recent months. The two sides are also expected to discuss energy cooperation and India's continued purchase of Russian crude oil. The United States has recently paused provisions that could have imposed additional tariffs on countries importing Russian energy, giving both sides additional time to assess the economic and geopolitical consequences.

Technology and critical minerals are another important part of the India-US agenda. Both countries have been working to expand cooperation in areas including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, space, biotechnology and strategic mineral supply chains. Discussions are also expected to examine ways to strengthen infrastructure, investment and supply-chain resilience as both nations seek to reduce vulnerabilities in strategically important sectors. The broader technology partnership is seen as an important component of the long-term relationship between New Delhi and Washington.

Regional security is also likely to feature prominently in the discussions. India and the US are expected to exchange views on the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia and their impact on global food, fuel and fertiliser supplies. India has also put forward proposals related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including measures aimed at protecting energy and food supplies and maintaining the movement of commercial shipping. Rubio's visit will therefore provide an opportunity for both sides to assess areas of convergence while addressing issues that have created pressure in the bilateral relationship.

Rubio's itinerary includes a visit to Jamnagar in Gujarat on October 21, where he is expected to visit the Reliance Industries refinery complex. His India visit follows his engagements in Central Asia and comes ahead of several major multilateral meetings where Indian and US leaders could continue discussions on trade, security and strategic cooperation. The latest diplomatic engagement is being closely watched for indications of progress on the proposed trade agreement and the future direction of India-US relations.
