Surya Political & National Desk, Chandigarh: Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has slammed Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Punjab. He complained that BJP remembers the sufferings of the people of Punjab and the drug problem only when the elections in the state are approaching. The Union Home Minister, who is spreading the hypocritical love of making Punjab a drug-free state, put aside the political interests behind his visit and demanded an answer as to why the Center failed to discharge its responsibilities properly.

Where were you when drugs increased during Akali-BJP regime?: Bhagwantman reminded that Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP coalition government was in power in Punjab from 2007 to 2017. He questioned why the BJP did not think of saving Punjab during that decade when the drug epidemic turned into a serious crisis with quintals of narcotics being openly circulated in the state. He made it clear that when more than 700 rice farmers were martyred on the borders during the farmers' historical protests, not a single BJP leader came to visit their families and it was his Aam Aadmi Party government that supported those families by giving them compensation and government jobs. Why is anti-drone system not provided on Pakistan border?: The Chief Minister stated that Punjab has about 550 km international border with Pakistan and 50 km along the border is under the responsibility of Border Security Force (BSF) under Union Ministry of Home Affairs. He expressed his anger as to why he was not allowed to meet with the Union Home Minister many times and plead with him to set up advanced 'anti-drone systems' to stop the drugs and weapons being smuggled by drones from Pakistan.

They alleged that the Center was playing a spectator role even though thousands of kilograms of drugs were being seized through the Kandla port in Gujarat and drugs were entering the country through the BJP-ruled states. Actions against the gangsters in Tihar and Sabarmati Jails?: Talking about the suppression of gangsters in Punjab, the Home Minister said that it should be recognized that the hardened gangsters who are responsible for the murders and run the networks are under the supervision of the Central Government in Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat and Tihar Jail in Delhi. Before pointing fingers at Punjab, Bhagwantman demanded that the Center should rectify its own failures and fulfill its basic responsibilities by tightening the NDPS Act without immediate bail for drug peddlers.
