Cyclone Murasu, which has formed over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, is steadily gaining strength and is expected to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm before reaching the Andhra Pradesh coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds across several districts of Andhra Pradesh, while Telangana is also likely to experience widespread rainfall and gusty winds.
Landfall Likely Between Nellore and Narsapur
According to the latest IMD bulletin, Cyclone Murasu is expected to move northwestwards and cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur during the night of November 2 and the early hours of November 3.
At the time of landfall, the cyclone could bring sustained winds of 100–110 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 120 kmph. The system is expected to intensify further over the Bay of Bengal before approaching the coast.
Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rain in Andhra Pradesh
The cyclone is likely to bring intense rainfall to Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on November 2 and 3.
A red alert for extremely heavy rainfall has been issued for Krishna, Guntur, Bapatla, Prakasam and Nellore districts for November 2. An orange alert has been issued for East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, NTR, Palnadu, Tirupati and Chittoor districts.
For November 3, extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Alluri Sitarama Raju and Eluru, while several other districts are under orange or heavy-rain warnings.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as heavy rain could result in waterlogging, flooding, crop damage and disruption to road and transport services, particularly in low-lying and coastal areas.
Telangana Also Likely to Receive Heavy Rain
The impact of Cyclone Murasu is not expected to be restricted to coastal Andhra Pradesh. Telangana is also likely to witness heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few days.
The IMD Hyderabad forecast indicates that districts including Khammam, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad, Suryapet, Nalgonda and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri may receive heavy rainfall on November 2 and 3.
In Hyderabad and surrounding areas such as Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy, cloudy conditions with intermittent light to moderate rainfall and gusty surface winds are expected.
Fishermen Advised to Stay Away From Sea
With the cyclone strengthening over the Bay of Bengal, sea conditions are expected to become dangerous. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, while those already at sea have been asked to return to the coast.
Officials are continuing to monitor the cyclone's movement and intensity, with further changes possible in the projected landfall location and rainfall pattern.
Residents in vulnerable areas of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are advised to follow official IMD and district administration alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and strong winds.
