Nationwide Strikes and Protests Disrupt France

Suryaa International Desk: France is experiencing significant disruption due to a nationwide general strike organized by labor and student unions. The protests, driven by demands for higher wages, increased pensions, and concerns over the rising cost of living, have brought daily life to a standstill across the country. Large rallies were held in major cities, including Paris, where the Eiffel Tower was temporarily closed due to the labor action.

The national rail network, including SNCF, metro, and regional RER trains, has been severely impacted, with numerous routes canceled. Additionally, approximately one-third of high schools have closed as teachers joined the strike, and classes at universities and colleges have been suspended. This labor unrest has intensified existing student dissatisfaction regarding educational funding that has been ongoing since September.

Major unions, including the CGT, have stated that while the costs of fuel, food, rent, gas, and electricity are rising, wages and pensions have not kept pace. Protesters are demanding that minimum wages be increased in line with inflation and are calling for taxes on corporate dividends and the wealthy.

To manage the demonstrations, the government has deployed approximately 70,000 police officers and armored vehicles nationwide. While many protests remained peaceful, clashes between protesters and police occurred in cities including Lyon, Nantes, and Toulouse, involving the use of stones and tear gas. These widespread protests present a challenge for the government of President Emmanuel Macron as the upcoming presidential election approaches.
