Suryaa National Desk: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stated that there must be full accountability for every rupee of public money. Addressing the All India Conference of Chairpersons of Public Accounts Committees (PAC) of Parliament and State Legislatures in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, Birla emphasized that PACs must maintain strict oversight to ensure allocated funds are spent for their intended purposes.
Birla called for government expenditures to be transparent and to bring real change to people's lives. He expressed concern over audit observations remaining pending for ten, fifteen, or twenty years and suggested creating a specific action plan to resolve these issues promptly. He noted that public representatives should audit the extent to which development works and welfare schemes have achieved their goals, rather than merely examining accounts.
The Speaker highlighted the critical role of legislative committees in preventing the misuse of financial funds. He suggested that committee members should conduct field visits to inspect the quality of government projects. Furthermore, Birla stated that modern technologies like data analytics and artificial intelligence can facilitate the analysis of large financial transactions. He reiterated that transparency and accountability are essential to strengthen public trust in the democratic system.
