Bulgaria Presidential Run-off Election Begins

✍️ Suryaa Now Reporter • 📅 Sunday, 01 November 2026 05:50 PM

Suryaa International Desk: The second round of presidential run-off polling has commenced in Bulgaria to elect a new president. The election follows an initial round where none of the twenty-seven candidates secured a majority, necessitating a final contest between the top two candidates as per constitutional requirements. The run-off features current interim president Iliana Iotova and former interim prime minister Andrey Gyurov.

In the first round of voting held last week, Iliana Iotova secured approximately 34 percent of the vote, while pro-Western opposition-backed candidate Andrey Gyurov received 32 percent. As neither candidate reached the required 50 percent threshold, a run-off became mandatory. Voters are casting their ballots at polling stations in the capital, Sofia, and across the country. Authorities have implemented security measures and arrangements to encourage voter participation following historically low turnout in the first round.

The campaign has been marked by political polarization regarding the Russia-Ukraine war and regional security. Iotova, who advocates for discussions with Russia and opposes military aid to Ukraine, has positioned herself as a proponent of peace. Conversely, Gyurov maintains a pro-Ukraine stance, calling for the country to remain firmly aligned with Europe. Recent drone attacks on Western transport vessels in the Black Sea region have also emerged as a factor influencing voter decisions.

The election results are expected to influence Bulgaria’s future diplomatic and economic direction, as the country is a key partner in the European Union and NATO. The presidency holds powers including the authority to appoint interim governments and exercise veto power over legislation. Officials plan to begin counting votes immediately after the polling process concludes tonight, with results expected shortly thereafter.
