Suryaa International Desk: A strong earthquake occurred in Japan on Sunday. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) officially stated that the tremor measured a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale. Residential buildings and commercial complexes in several cities shook for several seconds. As it was a holiday, residents who were at home rushed into the streets due to the tremors.

The meteorological department clarified that the earthquake's epicenter was located at a specific depth underground. Although the tremors caused minor waves in coastal areas, no tsunami warnings were issued. Officials confirmed there is no threat of a tsunami. Relief teams reported that there is no information regarding loss of life or major property damage at this time.

High-speed Shinkansen (bullet train) services were temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of railway tracks and bridges, and were resumed following inspections. The Nuclear Regulation Authority announced that no abnormal conditions were recorded at nearby nuclear power plants and that all safety standards are functioning normally. Disaster management officials have advised the public to remain alert, as there is a possibility of aftershocks with lower intensity in the coming days.
