Dispute arises in Thane over Diwali lights on trees

Suryaa National Desk: A controversy has emerged in Thane, Maharashtra, regarding Diwali decorations. Environmentalists and local residents have expressed opposition to the practice of driving iron nails into trees and wrapping them with electrical fairy lights for festive illumination.

Concerns have been raised that this practice damages tree bark, potentially leading to fungal or bacterial infections that could cause the trees to wither. Additionally, experts have noted that heat from electrical wires and the risk of short circuits pose threats to birds and squirrels inhabiting the trees.

In response to these concerns, the Thane Municipal Corporation has initiated efforts to remove the nails and wires from the trees. The municipal body has also filed a formal complaint with the local police under the Maharashtra Urban Areas Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, seeking legal action against those responsible for damaging the trees. Civic officials have warned that violating regulations regarding the protection of trees during festivals could result in fines or imprisonment.
