Surya Market & Economy Bureau, Mumbai: Massive withdrawal of funds by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) in Indian stock markets has hit a new all-time record. So far in calendar year 2026, foreign investors have collectively withdrawn net funds of over Rs 3.08 lakh crore from Indian equities. It is noteworthy that this is almost double compared to last year's total sales (around Rs. 1.66 lakh crore). Sales of more than Rs.48,056 crores have been recorded so far in the month of October alone.

Main Reasons for Serial Selling by FPIs: International developments and domestic market dynamics have been the main drivers of selling by FPIs: Bond Yields & Interest Rate Divergence: As interest yields in developed countries, especially US Treasury bonds, are attractive, foreign investors are shifting investments into safer bonds than emerging markets. A narrowing yield gap between India and developed countries has led to foreign capital withdrawal. Geopolitical Tensions & Crude Seg: US-Iran tensions in West Asia and crude oil prices hovering above $90 per barrel have raised concerns that India's current account deficit will put pressure on the rupee. Valuations Concerns: Valuations of large and mid-cap shares in Indian markets are historic. Foreign firms tend to take profits as they are higher than average. Sales in secondary market.Buys in IPOs: According to NSDL data, while FPIs sold equities worth Rs 3.64 lakh crore from the secondary market, they continued to make fresh investments of over Rs 55,000 crore through the primary market (IPOs).

This makes it clear that foreign investors have not lost faith in quality new public issues on a long-term basis. DIIs, retail SIPs as a hedge for the market: The participation of domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and retail investors is the main reason why Indian markets have remained stable despite record withdrawals by foreign investors. In 2026, domestic firms collectively bought equities worth Rs 6.83 lakh crore net. Record monthly mutual fund Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) inflows have significantly reduced the impact imbalance of foreign funds in domestic markets.
