The American government has taken a sensational decision at a time when tensions between African countries are reaching their peak. The US Treasury Department has imposed tough sanctions on Rwanda's defense ministry over its alleged support for rebels in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Washington has been furious that the Rwandan army is secretly providing weapons, logistics and military training to the M23 armed group, which is causing unrest in Congo.

This latest move has gained importance as the situation on the ground has not changed despite the ongoing diplomatic talks between the two countries. The United States has accused the direct involvement of Rwandan military forces in allowing rebel forces to take control of large swathes of territory in Congo's North and South Kivu provinces. While the sanctions against the Rwandan Defense Force are already in place, the US has recently decided to freeze financial transactions by including the Ministry of Defense in this list. In addition to freezing all assets of the company in the United States, any American citizen has been banned from doing business with it. The United States has made it clear that the conflict in eastern Congo, which has displaced thousands of people, should end.

However, the Rwandan government has strongly denied these allegations in the past saying that they have nothing to do with the internal war going on in Congo. It is noteworthy that, aside from Rwanda's arguments on international platforms, the superpowers led by the United States are taking strict measures to maintain peace and order in the region. US officials have revealed that human rights violations are increasing in the border areas and that these sanctions are being implemented with the aim of protecting civilians. In the wake of these developments, analysts are concerned that the geo-political (geopolitical) tensions in the African region are likely to escalate further.
