US Midterm Election Results and Their Potential Impact on India

Suryaa News Desk: The Democratic Party’s recent success in the US midterm elections, securing control over both the House of Representatives and the Senate, is expected to be a significant development for India. While the Republican administration remains in the White House, Democratic control of the legislature will likely lead to increased oversight of US foreign and trade policies. This political balance is expected to impact H-1B visas, Russian crude oil imports, international trade tariffs, and the Indian economy.

Regarding H-1B visas, which are vital to the Indian IT sector, Democratic control is viewed as a positive development. Congressional committees are expected to scrutinize executive orders that previously sought to increase visa fees or introduce stricter regulations. As Congress holds the authority to determine taxes and fees, this oversight may prevent unilateral decisions, potentially providing a more stable environment for H-1B visa holders and Indian IT companies over the next two years. Additionally, there is a possibility of discussions in the House regarding legislation to remove per-country caps to reduce green card waiting times.

US legislative oversight on crude oil imports from Russia is expected to increase. Democratic committees may push for stricter enforcement of international sanctions in Ukraine and Asia. Consequently, Indian oil refineries and financial institutions importing Russian oil will need to remain vigilant regarding secondary sanctions. However, diplomatic efforts to maintain supply and price stability in the global oil market may help balance India's energy security.

Increased legislative oversight is expected to reduce the likelihood of unilateral import tariffs, providing protection for Indian export sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and IT services. This political balance in Washington may reduce uncertainty in international markets, potentially encouraging foreign portfolio investment in Indian equity markets and stabilizing the rupee against the dollar.

In terms of trade diplomacy and bilateral agreements, the Democratic majority may accelerate the completion of stalled bilateral trade deals as the US administration seeks foreign policy achievements. However, there is a risk of pressure to grant US agricultural and dairy products broader access to Indian markets. Given that any unilateral concessions will face scrutiny from the strengthened opposition in Congress, India will need to balance its economic interests and farmer welfare with diplomatic considerations.

Regarding defense and strategic partnerships, the military alliance between India and the US is expected to continue. Both Democrats and Republicans support the strengthening of the Quad alliance to counter Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Full cooperation from the US Congress is expected in areas such as military technology transfer, artificial intelligence, space security, and joint naval exercises.

From an international financial perspective, the political shift may impact the US dollar and treasury bond yields, potentially encouraging foreign portfolio investors to favor Indian equity markets. Lower crude oil prices and increased foreign fund inflows could strengthen the rupee, help control inflation, and improve industrial profitability.

The rise of Indian-origin individuals to high positions abroad and bipartisan support for India in the US legislature are expected to strengthen diplomatic relations. Increased Congressional oversight in US policy decisions may provide the political stability necessary for India to effectively implement its national interests and economic strategies, allowing India to assert its position in IT, defense, trade, and international energy policy.
