Suryaa International Desk: The Sudanese army has arrested Ahmed Haroun, the former chairman of the National Congress Party (NCP) and a prominent Islamist leader, according to two senior officials from the party. This development occurs against the backdrop of ongoing political and internal crises in Sudan.

Ahmed Haroun, who served as a key leader during the administration of former president Omar al-Bashir, had been in hiding for several years. He is currently on the International Criminal Court (ICC) most-wanted list, with warrants issued against him regarding allegations of war crimes and genocide in the Darfur region during the early 2000s. Haroun has previously denied these allegations.

In a recent television podcast interview, Haroun stated that while his party did not have full political alignment with the Sudanese army, they were fighting alongside the military against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the ongoing civil war.

Analysts are monitoring how this arrest will impact the political future of Sudan, noting the intersection of civil war conditions, military strategies, and international legal pressure. Further details regarding the arrest of Haroun are currently awaited.
