Reddit and Digital Freedom Project Challenge Australian Social Media Ban in High Court

Suryaa International Desk: The Australian High Court has begun hearing a legal challenge against the government’s legislation prohibiting social media use for children under the age of 16. The petition was jointly filed by the social media platform Reddit and the organization Digital Freedom Project, which are challenging the constitutionality of the regulations.

The petitioners argue that the law infringes upon freedom of speech and the exchange of political information as protected by the Australian Constitution. The Digital Freedom Project stated that the ban denies youth under 16 the right to access digital information, social issues, and political developments. Additionally, legal representatives for Reddit raised concerns that the age verification process poses a risk to the privacy and personal data of citizens.

The Australian government defended the law in court, stating that algorithm-based social media platforms contribute to mental health issues, depression, and cyberbullying among children. The government maintained that it is their primary responsibility to protect the mental health and safety of future generations and that the regulations were drafted within legal limits.

The legislation allows for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars for social media companies that violate the regulations. As other countries consider similar measures to control the impact of social media on children, this legal battle in the Australian High Court is considered a significant milestone for global tech companies and regulatory bodies.
