Reddit and Digital Freedom Project Challenge Australia's Social Media Ban

Suryaa International Desk: Reddit and the Digital Freedom Project have initiated a legal challenge against the Australian government’s law banning social media for children under 16. The High Court of Australia has begun hearings regarding the validity of this legislation.

Petitioners argued that the government's decision infringes upon freedom of speech and undermines digital rights. During the proceedings, legal representatives for Reddit characterized the law as immature and impractical. While acknowledging the goal of protecting children from cyberbullying, they argued that the chosen method is flawed. They noted that because harassment can occur on gaming platforms and other online spaces, targeting only social media is unreasonable.

Lawyers expressed concern that these restrictions prevent youth from participating in online democratic and political discussions. Furthermore, they stated that age verification requirements pose a threat to the privacy and security of citizens' personal information.

The Australian government continues to defend the law. The Department of Communications stated that protecting children's mental health and safety is its primary responsibility and that it will not yield to pressure from tech companies.

Reports indicate that since the ban was implemented, many young people have been bypassing the restrictions using alternative methods or VPN technology. Technical experts suggest that the upcoming High Court ruling could significantly influence the development of digital regulations globally. This legal battle between tech companies and government restrictions has drawn international attention.
