Surya Global Tech Bureau, Seattle: The strategic changes undertaken by the international software giant 'Microsoft' in the last five years have achieved surprising results. The company's annual cloud revenue has crossed the $100 billion milestone on a record, with the cloud computing and Azure divisions on the move. As a result, the total revenue of the company has doubled in the last five years. But despite the massive growth in revenue, the company's overall headcount has been drastically reduced due to artificial intelligence (AI)-based automation and cost controls, sparking widespread debate in global tech circles.

Cloud and AI expansion are key drivers: Microsoft's move away from the traditional software licensing model towards cloud-based services has been a complete success. Azure's market share has grown aggressively through its integration of enterprise cloud services, cyber security, and generative AI tools. Quarter after quarter the cloud unit has become the main engine of revenue growth for the entire group, achieving the highest margins. Cloud revenue has kept the company's financials strong despite heavy capital expenditure on AI infrastructure and expansion of data centers. Automation Rush – Shrinking Workforce: On the one hand, the company has aggressively reduced the size of the workforce despite doubling revenue.

Increased internal productivity through AI-based operations, reduced middle management responsibilities, and reduced headcount with realignment of projects. A series of cost-cutting measures, including recently announced buyout offers to 60,000 people, have made Microsoft a leaner organization. Wall Street analysts are clear that these five-year developments have proven that higher productivity and higher revenue can be achieved with fewer employees.
