Popular senior actor Naseeruddin Shah has once again become a hot topic of discussion across the country with his controversial comments. Just days after expressing support for student protests at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), he has recently expressed his support for the students of Jamia Millia Islamia University. He made it clear that he would stand by the students in the ongoing struggle for students' rights and freedom of expression in universities.
Addressing the students on the occasion, he protested the categorization of those who questioned the injustices of the society and declared that he was also a proud intellectual Naxal, causing a stir in the domestic political and social circles. Naseeruddin Shah criticized the behavior of the authorities and the policies of the government towards the students. He opined that educational institutions are not just centers for awarding degrees, but also platforms for making voices to think and question the changes taking place in the society. He vehemently denied that labeling students as traitors or Naxalites is not a proper practice if they ask for their rights. He remarked that if every thinking person and every questioning voice is called by such names, he is very proud to be a thinking Naxal who thinks for the welfare of the society.
Different opinions are expressed in social media and political circles on these comments made by him. While many intellectuals and leaders of student unions welcome Naseeruddin Shah's free voice for student rights, others strongly criticize his comments as supporting an illegal ideology. Naseeruddin Shah, who has been in the news for his public comments on many contemporary and social issues in the past, recently his comments in support of Jamia Millia Islamia students became a hot topic at the national level.
