Suryaa International Desk: Space satellite imagery has revealed large-scale methane gas leaks in Turkey ahead of the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), which the country is set to host. Satellite surveys warn that major municipal waste landfills located near main cities in Turkey are emitting hazardous levels of greenhouse gases. Researchers identified that tons of methane gas per hour are being released into the atmosphere from primary waste hubs, including the Silivri landfill near Istanbul.

Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases driving up global temperatures, making these mega methane leakages from Turkey's primary waste management centers a cause for international concern. Environmentalists are demanding that Turkey take immediate measures to address its domestic environmental challenges ahead of hosting the climate summit. Analysts noted that shortcomings in waste management and the absence of adequate methane capture systems are escalating this threat.

Experts suggest that countries must enforce stricter laws to curb such environmental violations and leakages. They stated that this threat can only be mitigated through scientific waste recycling, organic waste management, and improved gas capture techniques. International circles are urging nations striving to control global warming to prioritize keeping domestic environmental hazards under control.
