Suryaa Now International Desk: The German government has taken a key step to signal a strategic shift in the international defense sector. German Chancellor visiting Japan The German government has taken a key step to signal a strategic shift in the international defense sector. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is on a visit to Japan, has confirmed that Germany is considering joining the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), a project to develop a new generation of fighter jets. The release of this announcement after a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan in Tokyo has become a hot topic of discussion in defense circles.

Berlin's leaning toward the highly ambitious sixth-generation fighter jet project jointly undertaken by Britain, Italy, and Japan has gained prominence. With Germany's previous major fighter jet development project with France stalled due to unavoidable reasons, Germany's defense ministry has turned its attention to alternative routes. In this context, Merz revealed that the authorities have been instructed to look into the appropriate opportunities to participate in the GCAP (GCAP) project which is being jointly developed by Britain, Italy and Japan. He opined that future challenges can be faced effectively by sharing technology in the defense sector and jointly designing advanced weapon systems.

However, it is yet to be clarified how the current member states will welcome Germany's entry into the GCAP project, which is already an alliance of many countries. Discussions are likely to begin soon on tweaking the terms of project finance and industrial participation. On the other hand, Germany and Japan have decided to further expand defense cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. Analysts believe that Germany's bold decision to build its next generation of fighter jets will take defense ties between Europe and Asia to a new milestone.
