FSSAI Accuses Pepsico and Monster of Misleading Consumers

Suryaa National Desk: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has leveled serious allegations against beverage giants Pepsico and Monster Beverage Company. In an affidavit submitted to the Delhi High Court, the FSSAI stated that these companies are intentionally misleading consumers by marketing high-caffeine products as "energy drinks."

The FSSAI informed the court that there are no established official standards for the "energy drink" category in India. The regulatory body expressed concern that labeling beverages containing high amounts of caffeine, sugar, and amino acids like taurine as energy drinks poses significant public health risks. The FSSAI stated that it is taking these measures to prevent consumer deception and affirmed that legal action will continue against companies selling products in violation of regulations.

While Pepsico and Monster previously received relief from the court regarding these regulations, the FSSAI continues to maintain its position. Although the court previously permitted the sale of existing market stock, it had issued orders prohibiting the use of the "energy drink" label on new stock. The court is expected to conduct further hearings on this matter soon. This development has sparked discussions regarding quality, labeling regulations, and health standards within India's growing energy drink market.
