Cigarette Prices Surge at Tea Stalls in Emmiganur

✍️ Suryaa Now Reporter • 📅 Sunday, 08 November 2026 05:10 PM

Suryaa News Desk: Consumers in Emmiganur, Kurnool district, are reporting significant price increases for cigarettes at local tea stalls. Reports indicate that individual cigarette packs are being sold at prices ranging from 100 to 120 rupees above the standard rates. In some instances, packs priced at 325 rupees are being sold for 440 rupees.

Shop owners reportedly justify these increased prices as a tax for the facilities provided at their establishments. Customers have expressed frustration regarding these charges, noting that they are paying higher amounts to consume cigarettes while frequenting these tea centers.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003. Despite Section 4 of the Act prohibiting smoking in public places, tea stalls are allegedly facilitating smoking by providing seating for customers to consume tea and cigarettes simultaneously. Observers have pointed out that this practice impacts the health of people in the vicinity.

There are calls for the administrative authorities to take action against the unauthorized price hikes and to enforce regulations regarding smoking in public spaces to protect public health.
